In 2005, an invitation from Featherstone Workshop sparked the development of a synthetic stone material. Roth and Hughto were tasked with guiding professional artists to paint en plein air at iconic locations on Martha's Vineyard. While Roth is capable of painting from life, her primary focus is on abstraction. She recalls childhood drawings made in wet sand as her father mixed plaster with ocean water to preserve her art.
This memory inspired her to reach out to Mark Golden, resulting in a material that both artists have integrated into their work. This innovative hybrid of a sculpture and painting material offers a direct approach, allowing for vibrant colors that surpass the limitations of plaster or concrete, and avoids the multi-step process typical of clay. Roth continues to explore self-supporting painting, while Hughto incorporates della Robbia-inspired portraiture into his practice, simultaneously utilizing the material for direct sculptural work.
